Why Staying Just Outside Central Ubud Might Actually Be the Better Choice
When people plan their first trip to Ubud, they often assume they should stay right in the centre. On paper, it makes sense: close to the market, cafés, yoga studios, Monkey Forest, and everything you might want to visit. But after arriving, many travelers quickly realize that central Ubud is busier, louder, and more compact than expected. Scooters weave through narrow roads, people spill out of restaurants, and daytime traffic moves at a slow crawl during peak hours.
For some, that energy is exciting. For others, especially anyone in a wellness-focused or slow-travel mindset, staying just outside the centre ends up being a much better match.
More Space to Breathe
When you move even a few minutes away from the core, Ubud starts to feel different. Streets widen, rice fields appear between houses, and the pace slows down. You start to hear birds and roosters instead of car horns. You sleep better. Mornings feel softer. This small shift makes a big difference, especially if you are staying for more than a couple of nights.
Walkability Without the Congestion
People often assume that staying outside the centre means being far away from everything, but Ubud is surprisingly compact. Many “outer” areas are still within a short drive, walk, or shuttle ride of the main spots. The benefit is that you can dip into the lively parts when you want, then retreat to somewhere calmer when you do not.
More Nature, Less Noise
Rice fields, gardens, riverbanks, and small village paths tend to cluster on the edges of town. This means your accommodation is more likely to have greenery around it, which changes how you spend your time. You might drink your morning coffee outside instead of rushing out, or read by the pool in the afternoon instead of filling every hour with activities.
Better Sleep and Quiet Evenings
Ubud evenings are peaceful in general, but the centre can stay busy longer due to traffic and restaurants. Staying slightly outside gives you quieter nights and early mornings, which matters more than people expect. A good sleep can make the whole trip feel more restorative.
Value for Money
Another benefit: you often get more for your budget. Garden views, bigger rooms, small pools, or open terraces are more common outside central Ubud than directly in it.
Radha Phala Resort & Spa
The south-of-centre rice field pocket is a good example of this balance. Radha Phala sits in this area, surrounded by gardens and local homes, with rice fields just behind the property. It is close enough for easy access to the main parts of Ubud, but far enough for mornings and nights to feel calm. It is the sort of place where you might spend more time on your terrace or by the pool than you originally planned, simply because the environment encourages you to slow down.
If you came to Ubud for nature, rest, or a slower rhythm, staying slightly outside the centre is often the smarter choice. You still get access to everything you want, just without sacrificing the peace that makes Ubud special in the first place.
